I seem to have amassed quite the collection of these “massager style” vibrators. While originally these vibrators were mass-marketed and intended for body massage (not orgasm) the obsession with their power has caused some companies to make sex toy versions that are not found in your local drugstore like the Hitachi Magic Wand or the Acuvibe massager are. I used to be a die-hard Hitachi MW fan. But over the years of reviewing I’ve figured out that it’s less about holy-shit-power and more about the type of vibrations. A rumbly, deep vibration that will stimulate more than just the outside portion of my clitoris is ideal. And it doesn’t have to be Hitachi MW strength to achieve that.

But, on to the review. At the same time that I was testing out all the Vibratex Mystic Wands I had two of the Fairy Wands to try out. The Fairy Wand massager line is a long line from a Japanese Company called Media Craft Inc. They have come out with almost an overkill in sizes – but given what I’ve seen the Japanese do with KitKats1 and Pokemon, it seems to be capitalizing more on the “collect them all!” angle. I have the Fairy rechargeable wand massager and the full-sized plug-in Fairy wand massager. There’s also the Fairy Baby Wand (high-pitched, teeny vibe, USB-charged); the Fairy Mini Wand (plug-in, slightly larger than the Fairy Rechargeable); the Fairy Miniature Massager (either an attachable 6-AA battery pack or a more powerful a/c adapter); the Fairy Pocket Mini (rechargeable, slimmer handle than the Fairy regular rechargeable, shorter in size). Is your head spinning yet? Mine is. You’ll see them referred to in some reviews a little different. Some use the term “mini mini” for one of them, I can’t figure out which one. They’re all pretty much the same from what I’ve read; they’re all pretty powerful, most have that variance wheel for power, they’re all a version of pink and white, none of them offer any “patterns”, they all come in basic cardboard boxes with lots of Japanese text and with very chintzy drawstring pouches. The smaller ones are more “buzzy” (which buzzy + high powered can feel more numbing to your genitals and/or hand).

The plug-in style Fairy massager wand is best compared to the Hitachi Magic Wand in that both are large, both plug in to a wall outlet rather than recharging or requiring batteries, and both are very VERY powerful. Where the Hitachi has only two speeds, “wow” and “holy fuck”, the Fairy wand improved on that idea by using a dial controller instead. Think mouse-wheel. It acts like a dimmer switch, giving you many different speeds. The lower end is rumbly but yet still manages to be a bit buzzy. The lower speeds on the Fairy are definitely less than the Hitachi on low. And with the dimmer switch aspect, you can easily (almost too easily, sometimes) vary the speeds without ever turning it off. The Hitachi’s rocker switch goes “low” then “off” then “high”.

Size Comparison: Hitachi Magic Wand vs Fairy Massager Wand

At first I thought that maybe the Fairy wand was a bit more powerful than the Hitachi wand2. I probably thought that at first because it’s honestly been a long time since I’ve used the Hitachi. Side by side comparisons though show that they’re pretty dead equal when comparing their top speeds. Both also are loud, emitting that high-pitched weed-whacker like noise. So not discreet. Neither Hitachi or Fairy have the nice silicone head like the Mystic wands do, so cleaning/sanitizing/sharing isn’t easy. The Fairy wand heads are all hard plastic, with lots of ridges. Not the most pleasurable feeling on high. (also, a bitch to clean)

Size comparison of the Mystic Wand Rechargeable and the Fairy Wand Rechargeable

The Fairy rechargeable is a bit less “rumbly” than the full-size Fairy, but almost as powerful. Which makes the vibrations a bit itchy, to be honest. It’s loud as well, but lacks that high-pitched whine of the full-sized Fairy and the Hitachi MW. The Japanese companies like to have interesting rechargers, I’ve noticed. The recharger for the Fairy has a weird iPod-like plug for the massager but the plug to the wall is fun: You know how some a/c chargers have prongs that fold so that it’s less bulky when traveling? This one kind of does that except it folds out – so that the base takes up very little space in your outlet. Shown below is folded out and “normal”.

The full-size Fairy has a head that’s pretty darn similar in size and shape to the Hitachi MW, so attachments for the Hitachi could be used on it. The smaller Fairies have specially made attachments (which like to feature “nubs” – way to make an itchy vibe even MORE itchy! no thanks).

If you really like the Hitachi Magic Wand, then you will likely really like the Fairy Wand (unless you hate baby-girl-pink – their only color scheme) because it matches the power but gives more variance. For a rechargeable, the Fairy does pack more of a punch than the rechargeable Mystic wand, but in a less pleasant way for me.

SO. Super high powered is what you want? Go for the original Hitachi or the Fairy plug-in. Otherwise, I’m going to direct you back to the Mystic Wands: Superior looks and materials and a more pleasant-feeling type of vibration.

Thanks to EdenFantasys for providing me with these sex toys in exchange for my bluntly honest review :)

  1. No, I’m not joking, only in Japan can you find odd flavors of KitKats such as Soybean, Strawberry, Apple Vinegar and more
  2. Ok confession time: I was so anxious to try out the power that I plugged it in and pressed it to my vulva whilst clothed. Cranked it up to high. Went “HOLY SHIT!” and then realized that it um….well…it vibrated the pee out of me a little. I sure as hell didn’t get arousal-wet enough to dampen both panties and pants

As I begin to prepare for the strong possibility of doing a Sex Toy Education Workshop, hosted by a friend, I’m finding that there’s so much information I want to share and I don’t know if I can get it all in.

The first half of the Workshop will be spent talking about the various sex toy materials; their safety rating, their mating habits, their lube preference. The second half will be spent teaching them how to shop for sex toys online – which will include teaching them about reviews.

When I first started buying sex toys it was from places like Adam & Eve and MyPleasure. My husband actually found MP because I’d not been impressed with A&E’s stuff. But the problem with buying sex toys online 6 years ago was that the reviews existed solely on the sex toy retailer’s site. You didn’t know who was writing it, what they had to compare it to, what type of toys they liked or even if it was a real person. Even to this day there are a few sites that have onsite paragraph reviews that just seem iffy – too much praise for a toy that I and others found lacking. I’d say that the first $200 worth of sex toys ended up being disappointments. Sure, the expensive Rabbit was amazing until it died after not too many uses. The only toy that’s survived from my first year of sex toy buying (or rather said, pre-reviewing) was a powerful yet cheap ass “pocket rocket” vibe that had the right type of vibrations for me.

I wish I’d known not to buy jelly toys, that’s a no-brainer. I wish I’d known then about the vibe-in-disguise that is the massager types – Hitachi, Wahl, Acuvibe, etc.

So my question to all my readers, and even the seasoned reviewers, is what mistakes did you make when you bought your first toys? What do you know now that you wish you’d known then? What information could someone have given you that might have resulted in purchases that were not a colossal waste of money? Or, what types of toys/materials had you seen but been too wary to purchase and what information about them changed your mind for the better?

….when a site scrapes your content, and the first thing they scrape…is a post about ANOTHER site illegally scraping / copyright violation.

*blinks*

It was so meta, AAG and I couldn’t even comprehend it this morning. She found out about it only because I have lots of links in that post and someone followed a link to her site and she noticed it in her stats tracker. On the plus side, I was (after much work) able to track down the hosting provider for this site (huggingandkissing dot com) – they didn’t use somebody mainstream. Also, due to the nature of their site’s layout, the scraped posts aren’t appearing on the front pages or for that matter, easily found. They’re being put under a category listing of “news”. http://huggingandkissing.com/?cat=1651 So keep an eye on that particular section of their site, bloggers, for your own content and your friends. I’ve already emailed about half a dozen people to let them know about it. Go here to report it: http://www.exmasters.com/about/about-contact/

I was told by the live chat agent that the “abuse” email is the one to use. I had emailed them, and then later when I found two more of mine pop up (perhaps an hour later?) the original post I’d claimed as copyright violation/scraping was already gone (but not before I got a screenshot). So while I was in live chat with this guy I gave him the direct links to my two posts and they were gone within a minute. If you can get the live chat when they’re online, it’s the quickest route.

Here’s something very interesting admitted by my chat support guy:

Lilly: If there are enough complaints, will the site get shut down?
Milo: this is first for whole time, so most probably not
Milo: also, reponsible provider is always better than e.g. chinese or russian provider, where can be the site moved after suspending by the owner
Lilly: I’m sorry, I don’t know what you mean by that2
Milo: i mean that if we suspend the site, it can be online after 10 minutes on another provider3
Milo: so it doesn’t make any sense

Valid point. I was ultimately quite upset that HostGator outright said to me on Twitter that after a few complaints they’d take down scandalshack, but they never did. And scandalshack is STILL scraping posts.

But remember what I said in my post about them, how the reason I probably didn’t get scraped is because I’m self-hosted WP and can use plugins, specifically the one called NoMoreFrames which blocks the scraping script? Yeah, these new people are copy/pasting by hand from my feed. How can I tell? View the screenshots below, and I think you’ll understand why.

I don’t recall all of the people who got scraped in the scandalshack blowup a few weeks ago, but do any of you know if any of those being scraped showed a full feed (as opposed to partial feed which I hate)?

There’s plugins for self-hosted WP users to insert copyright protection aiding things into their RSS feed posts (just see mine as example) and I think that in Blogger now under settings you can add in your own footer for the feed, so you can add in a link to your blog, the blog name, a unique long set of alphanumeric characters, etc so that at least you can find it or others will know when they read the site that it’s been stolen. But I don’t know if there’s anything for free WP users, unless you aggregate your feed through Feedburner and they do have some options. I’m looking into finding out more.

  1. The site apparently caught on to me linking to their old category 164/news, so they deleted it and created a new one. The articles don’t show up on the site, but they ARE being fed to their Twitter stream. They know what they’re doing and are trying their best to keep on doing it
  2. They’re a Czech-based company and I his English is a wee bit rusty, heh
  3. Meaning, they are at least a responsible provider and will act immediately to remove your content. But you have to tell them each and every time. His point is that not all hosting companies would be so quick acting or even care. I ran into that problem with the freak safari guys

Yeah. Etsy has sex toys. Primarily glass, and some very damn nice ones at that. There’s the hippydippy ceramic ones that make me want to take a ceramics class just so I can make one better, and there’s the few really unique and awesome silicone dildos.

But then, one night you’re searching for femur bones because of a story you were reminded of regarding a nun masturbating with a charred femur bone and you come across weird shit like a guy who sells small animal parts but then you get the brilliant idea to look at those who make wooden dildos because surely you can make a great replica of a charred femur from a pale wood, right? and then you run across things like this.

Found via Etsy Seller

The good parts “Let the Sergeant take command of your satisfaction. At the front end It has five indented stripes to stimulate the clitoris and “G” Spot. The rear is tapered for anal stimulation. The circumference is very smooth and uniform for full contact.”

Ok. I mean, am I reading this wrong or does it sound like they intend for a straight item to stimulate both the clitoris and the G spot at the same time? And didn’t anybody school them on the ins and outs of buttsex toys, specifically, “must have a flared base”???

And third…..it’s “finished” with olive oil.

Thank goddess we have places like Hans and NobEssence.

I’m still a little verklempt…..talk amongst yourselves.

You know how very occasionally someone will surprise you? Yeah. I had that happen recently. A friend who just got separated from a passionless marriage is suddenly behaving like a 23 year old.

Or, rather, how we SHOULD have behaved when WE were 23. Or 21. Good for her. She suddenly opened up like never before we when the talk of sex rolled around I admitted to the very first person from my old life that I have a sex blog. Did I give her the address? Fuck no, LOL. But we discussed her newfound fetishes, her sex drive, what she likes….she kept saying “You’re gonna think we’re freaks” and all I could say was “Trust me honey…..you have no idea how normal you probably are. I’ve either done it, thought about doing it, wanted to do it, or read about it on FetLife”. But it was nice. It really was. She’s never owned a sex toy, and now would like to explore things with her new man. I loved being able to give advice and tell her how I know all this stuff….that I review sex toys. That we could finally TALK about sex toys.

And while she thinks it’s all awesome and wonderful, what I do and what I write about, I’m still reluctant to show her the blog. And it doesn’t make me any more likely to tell other old friends; frankly she’s the most liberal of them all – at least the ones I consider “friends” enough to even talk to anymore. I can remember years ago when I still lived at home and my now-husband and I first opened up our relationship. Her and I were finally reconnecting again a little and I thought about telling her. I wanted to tell her; I wanted to tell SOMEone. But it never came out the day I was planning to tell her and honestly….that’s probably for the best.

As I look back now I can see the subtle changes in her and how that passionless marriage slowly changed her. As I recall the times prior to their marriage I can still see a little of the girl I used to know when we were best friends in high school (just more vibrant). But I can also recall a time when we reconnected shortly before their wedding and I had just discovered the world of sex toys; I remember excitedly telling her about my rabbit vibrator and the odd look and reaction I got from her – that reaction prevented me from telling anyone else or ever broaching that subject with her again. Now I know what was going on at that time and I can understand.

I have to admit something, while we’re on the subject of age and sexuality – I envy these young bloggers, the ones in college. Sure, I had some fun in college but I was still so repressed compared to now. A vibrator? That hadn’t even entered my world as a fledgling though, lol. So yes……oh how I envy these young bloggers who have already experienced and explored more of their sexuality than I had by age 30. But at least I’m getting there now, right? Better late than never?
